First: everyone who likes metal should be listening to the following bands: Candlemass (classic 80's doom metal band - their new album kills, but listen to Nightfall first), Ensiferum (a weird clusterfuck of melodic death and folk metal that comes out somehow completely awesome), Mammatus (stoner metal with really heavy psychedelic influence), Kalas (dudes from Sleep, Samiam, Econochrist, and some other super legit bands playing stuff that sounds sort of like later Planes Mistaken For Stars, but more metal), Turisas (cheesy Finnish battle metal for people who like their Nintendo and their Blind Guardian equally), and Orcustus (kvlt-ass black metal, ex-Gorgoroth, although I don't think either of those dudes are still in the band).
So here's what's up, in a nutshell:
- I haven't spent a consecutive 24 hours sober in quite some time. This is inexcusable. Much as I like getting drunk, I should probably start getting my act together. So I think I'll cut down to one night a week. It's been fun, but there have been too many weird nights lately. I'm sort of scared by how much some of my friends have been drinking, and I'd really rather not end up in their place. Plus I've put on a couple unwanted pounds. I have a little beer gut going and I'd rather not. I guess that generally doesn't bother guys all that much, but I like to fit into the clothes I have 'cause shopping for new ones is a pain when it's because your old ones don't fit.
- I am broke as hell. This is a direct result of item 1.
- I quit smoking. Then I started again. Then I ran out of money shortly after buying a pack because I was drinking a lot, and now I think I'm gonna quit again. Shit's too expensive and sort of stupid. Although it is nice having something to do with my hands in a social situation because otherwise I just have no idea.
- I'm gonna make an effort to start keeping up with my friends page. I really haven't been, lately. Sorry 'bout that.
- I'm on a bunch of other social networks now, too. Goodreads, MySpace, Twitter, Tumblr, LiveJournal (everything is cross-posted from here, actually) and you can just search for me by name on Facebook (hint: check the MySpace page if you don't know it).
As for what I've actually been doing:
- Playing guitar pretty much all the time.
- Practicing the banjo more often.
- Me and Alex built a dreamachine a couple nights ago out of an old turntable and some poster board.
- Zoo Builder on Facebook is addictive as hell.
Do you think the Wii Fit could ever replace gyms?
Not until the controller weighs 100 pounds.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney says Obama's policies raise the risk of another U.S. terror attack. Do you agree or disagree?
Well, Dick Cheney has never been someone whose opinion meant much to me, and he's still not.
I'm not worried about terrorists. I haven't been since I saw that the so-called "safety" we were being given to drive it off was a thousand times worse than the threat of being blown up by Muslims. Now I can't go to the airport without someone looking at my dick on an X-ray machine. For a good 7 years I couldn't speak my mind without being afraid of harassment. I'll take the threat of terrorism over constant government enforced invasions of privacy, harassment and paranoia. I actually sort of like Obama as president so far. He's not as much of a bumbling fuckup as any of the other presidents we've had in the past 60 years or so. At least, not yet.
That said, Dick Cheney, remember your place in American politics: you're a washed up embarrassment. The policies you took part in making made the country a worse place to live for everyone. if anyone has the right to be critical of Obama's policies, it's sure as hell not you. He's been given the unenviable task of cleaning up the mess that you made in the first place. And I think he's done as good a job as can be expected of him. He's stopped DEA raids on medical marijuana dispensaries that operate in line with state law, for one thing. Therefore, he's doing a better job of respecting states' rights (you know, that thing the Republican party is supposed to be all about) than you ever did. He's pretty much invalidated all the "signing statements" that the administration you were a part of made to undermine congress's ability to legislate. He's pretty much been shoveling your shit so far. And you left a lot of it. Honestly, I'm more afraid that people like you will take power again than I am of terrorists. I like my freedom, and no one is more of a threat to it than traitors like you.
Bottom line: that terrorist attack is a risk I'm willing to take.
I call it the Electric Fields A/V Club.
The premise, stolen from The Lion, also on Tumblr, is that I associate songs with pictures, and post both.
Feel free to send pictures.
I'll make the musical selections, though.
