Here's what I've been listening to lately:
Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine
Burning Spear - Hail H.I.M.
Om - Pilgrimage
The Velvet Underground - Loaded
Bum Kon - Drunken Sex Sucks (writeup coming soon over on W♥M! I really need to start cranking those out faster, and probably will now that Firefox 3 isn't a pain in the ass on Vox anymore!)
The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
Big Black - Songs About Fucking
The Stooges - Fun House
Hot Water Music - Fuel For the Hate Game
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy, & the Lash
Avail - Dixie
I haven't bought any records lately. And honestly, all I'm really looking forward to this year are Sigur Rós (but only if the vinyl release isn't like 50 bucks at the Record Exchange again) and The Hold Steady. No really interesting shows coming up. I kind of like the downtime and actually having some extra cash. Right now, I've got a good 60-some bucks saved up. I can't complain. I don't know when the next show we're playing is, but I hope it's not for a couple weeks, at least. I kinda feel like we should be spreading our shows out so we're not a "regular" thing that people will get bored with. I also kinda feel like we should be one of those bands no one will really know what to expect from, live. So far, we've pulled that off. Hopefully we can keep doing it.
In other news, I'm tired as hell from a restless sleep on my floor last night because of all the stuff stacked on my bed. And my back kinda hurts. On top of all the soreness from the weekend. But to be honest, it all kinda feels good. I enjoy work. It's too bad I hate employment and the restrictions that come with it. Oh, and I am definitely looking forward to my shoulders healing up so they don't feel like they're going to drop my arms when I lift my cab.
Oh, and I've done away with another way of talking to me. I quietly deleted both the Twitter and the Last.FM. Twitter just wasn't useful for me, and Last.FM is just kind of a crappy community full of really stupid people and trolls, for the most part. To be honest, I don't think anyone's really noticed I'm gone from Last.FM, which just validates that account's deletion.
1. Firefox 3 has totally redeemed itself with the released version, which corrected the horrible freezing issue that the betas all seemed to have on my computer (which was probably not at all unrelated to how much of a resource hog it was).
2. I was bored as hell all day, wishing I had someone to jam with acoustic. I hope I have someone to do that with tomorrow, because I am gonna be bored as crap on a stick waiting for the carpets to dry.
3. I ordered a shortwave radio the other day. I hope it shows up soon. I'm probably going to make recordings from it. Next Neat ThingTM I buy will probably be a 4-track, so I don't have to try and figure out how to run a microphone through my jambox.
4. I watched some awesome documentary on PBS earlier about a bunch of dudes sailing boats around the world in the late 60's, and about how one of them tried to cheat, was overcome with shame, and killed himself.
5. There's some terrible band on NBC right now. They sound like Canadians (in that obnoxious Alanis Morrissette sort of way) meets Alvin and the Chipmunks trying to play that "indie rock" thing all the iPod commercials are talking about. And wow. This is inconceivably bad. I don't recognize the song right now, but in a couple seconds maybe they'll say who it is... and... Oh. It's... Tegan and Sara. Okay. I've never listened to them, but they're fucking horrible. I hope they break up or at least get dropped soon because they are bad as shit. I'm glad I've more or less avoided them up until now. I also hate the name, "Tegan." I don't know why, but it just does not sound good to me.
6. Okay, I'm done with this post. Time to attempt to fall asleep or something. This show on PBS is really boring. It's a bunch of bad actors pretending to argue about painting. I think I'll leave that on. Painting might be one of the most boring things to be enthusiastic about ever to me, so that should put me to sleep nice and quick!
Not to mention that, since I upgraded, my hard drive has gotten really cluttered, so it's time to just back my shit up and format, anyway.
Anyone tried Fedora?
Because unless someone's had a really bad experience with it, I'm about to.
(I have a couple hours before this thing is even done downloading, though).
Last night was fun. Hung out at Mulligan's with Alex and Jake. Saw Dave and Boone there. It was $1 Pabst night, so we drank a lot of Pabst.
Went thrifting with Alex, Mike, Fernando, and another dude whose name consistently escapes me.
Got some awesome dress pants that fit me perfectly (and just how I like; tight around the crotch and ass, because my crotch and ass are truly something to behold).
Also, an Air Force blazer, a track jacket, a Bugle Boy clusterfuck of a shirt, a button-up flannel hoodie, a striped sweater, a t-shirt that says "Kingdom of Sweden" on it, a tape recorder, and a bunch of tapes (Willie Nelson, Meat Loaf, Madonna, AC/DC, and Willie Nelson with Waylon Jennings! Score!)
You can never have too much Willie Nelson. My collection of Willie Nelson albums is nowhere near where it should be.
Tonight, vegan barbecue in the woods! Hot damn!
- Hanging out with Erik outdoors. So fucking nice out today.
- Bumpin' the new Lair of the Minotaur album in my car, giving it a few listens before writing it up for W♥M (quick preview: it's pretty fucking rad, and makes me want to hit stuff with an axe).
- Drinking coffee on an empty stomach.
- Trying to recover from the worst, most restless sleep I've had in years. I dreamed I was playing the accordion naked in a record shop and got arrested. On a related note, I have a new thing to add to my "things to do before I die" list.
Well, I'm feeling a hell of a lot better today. I don't know what was wrong last night, but right now, I'm feeling significantly less shitty. Maybe lunch didn't agree with my system or something. I don't know. The wound in my mouth is still looking pretty gnar, but I cleaned it out really well yesterday, and it's looking better.
Anyway, I'm going out to lunch with my family soon. We're going to some steakhouse where I won't be able to eat anything, but I'm kind of expected to go. I'm not really looking forward to it, but at least I can have a couple beers or something. Then I guess Alex wants to chill later. After that, I'm going to try and get an article written for W♥M, especially since I feel kinda bad for submitting one article and disappearing. Sorry about that!
I also have a great idea for a picture day: drunk by noon. I figure if I want to be a rockstar, I've got to start drinking like one.
Well, I admit, there was a miscommunication, totally on my end earlier. So how's that book, Jeff? We still do need to chill if you're ever in town.
Either way, I ended up at the Record Exchange. Hung out with the (bored as fuck) employees a bit, while maybe six or seven people total just kinda chilled out and browsed vinyl while the CD section sat empty. I love being out on Super Bowl Sunday for just that reason. You can go out and have yourself peace and quiet all at the same time. I ended up with a bunch of shit I probably should've already had. Loaded and the self-titled by The Velvet Underground, Recent Songs by Leonard Cohen, and the less-essential Strung Out in Heaven by The Brian Jonestown Massacre, who never fail to put out stuff I dig.
So I actually know who's playing in the Super Bowl now, and I don't feel I'm any better or worse off for it. I asked my mom. She also said Tom Petty didn't play any songs she knew. She said my dad knew one of them. I think one Tom Petty song is about all I know, or care to know, as well. It's not that I don't like his stuff, it's just that I can't see myself liking his stuff.
Also, I have a metric assload of beer in the fridge. I've got a bottle of Deep Ender's Dark Porter (Anderson Valley), Old Boardhead '07 Reserve (Full Sail), Arrogant Bastard (Stone), and some German beer called Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock (Brauerei Heller-Trom). I'm about to drink the porter right now. It's poured a coffee colored dark brown with a creamy head and a nice chocolate-coffee smell. Maybe a hint of cinnamon? More coffee than chocolate in the taste. Goes down nice and smooth. Oh yes. It's good. This bottle won't last long.
I guess Alex found a Music Man cab for $100 at a pawn shop.
This could mean good things. Or the cab could be trashed and it could mean nothing. But I'm staying optimistic.
Coffee or lunch with Kendra tomorrow (well, later today), hopefully.
Pictures of tonight's parties later. Palm Reader played a killer set tonight and cleared all the straight edgers except AJ out of the room. We had beer over at Ian's house after the show.
And now, I'm gonna try and operate on roughly 3 hours of sleep today. Waking at 7:30 to get all my shit done.
My sleep schedule may possibly be turned around.
I still woke up at 3:00 in the afternoon today, but at least I didn't go to bed at 5 AM.
I know Erik wanted to do something after he gets off work. Which is in like 15 minutes. I have no idea what we'll do. But chances are, we'll meet up with Alex somewhere (assuming he's not working graveyard) and play some music.
Last time we were up at the reverb cavern, some people came up, though and talked to us. They weren't security guards or anything, but that spot might be getting a little too hot for comfort. Which is a shame, because the echo in there is really nice for recording, as this recording of ours demonstrates.
Anyway, I might take a bunch of pictures. It's gonna be a cold'n tonight. 14 degrees. Probably no snow at least, but still, damn!
