Shows like every freakin' night! This is getting brutal! There's also a show tomorrow night at Ian's house and a show the night after at Neurolux.
Tonight was The Old Haunts (A Kill Rock Stars band featuring Tobi Vail from Bikini Kill; they sound like a more punk rock Old Time Relijun), Batman Vs. Predator (an awesome drum & bass noise/grind band), The Donna Vulture (straight-up New York Dolls style rock 'n' roll from here in Boise) and Sacco & Vanzetti (who sound kinda like something Plan-It-X would put out; they're basically my friends, Jake, Charles, and Ian, who also happens to be Erik's brother).
The show was a lot of fun. People really got into the touring bands. I thought the floor was gonna collapse under the weight of so many people dancing on it, and The Old Haunts' bassist had to move into the hallway by the kitchen because the room was so crowded he couldn't stand in it without getting run into by people dancing. The locals were a lot of fun. It was the first time I'd seen either of them. All in all, it was a good night.
The show was a damn good time. Hummingbird slayed, of course. They had a fill-in on bass, but he'd just gone on tour with them, so he was more than good enough. Those guys always rule live. Mike handed me a flyer for a show on June 8th with Empty Eyes, Skull Collector, and Murder and the Media Machine. That should be a good'un. The other local was Composure, and they had more a 90's straight edge vibe going on. Not really my cuppa tea, but they sounded pretty good, especially considering they had two fill-ins, including a bassist who'd had 30 minutes before the show to learn his parts.
The touring bands all shared a bunch of members between them, and, as a result, showed up in two vans instead of the three that would be expected. Saber Tooth Zombie set up on the floor. Their singer was really animated, and their sound seemed kinda rough, but they were engaging and a lot of fun. Life Long Tragedy was a bit more polished, playing thrashy stuff that's good for people to stomp around the floor to. Ceremony were fast, heavy, and impossible to take pictures of because of the excellent crowd reaction.
This was a pretty damn fun show. I should also point out that it's still very early in the tour, so everyone reading this can probably catch them, provided they read it within like the next couple days or something. Here's some crappy pictures to get you in the mood!
Ceremony, Life Long Tragedy, Sabertooth Zombie, Hummingbird of Death, and Composure tonight!
At the Venue! I can let it slide, though. The xJESUSxCOREx kids gotta have a band that doesn't suck mountains of ass to listen to every now and then, too. They just seem to need it a lot less often than the rest of us.
Even with the worst cold on Earth, I manage to stay busy. Last night was Kelly and Victoria's birthday party. I was far less drunk than everyone else there. In fact, I wasn't really drunk at all. But that didn't stop me from being obnoxious and having a good time. I saw Quinn and Koji there. I hadn't seen either of those guys in a pretty long time, so that was pretty awesome. I made Quinn promise to offer a high five from me to a girl we both apparently thought was kinda cute in high school, who just recently got a job at the same place as him. I really don't have much interest in her anymore, but the idea of Quinn offering someone a high five for me was just pretty funny at the time.
Tonight was a really great show at that house behind Boise High. The first few bands, to put it politely, were not really my cuppa tea. But then Palm Reader played, melted everyone's face off and everything was cool again. I drove with them and some of "their" gear (Erik actually used my guitar and amp, so only some of it was actually theirs) back up to the Bomb Shelter, and, when attempting to listen to the tape of the show, we discovered that Alex had forgotten to hit the record button on the four-track (or something like that; the point is, there was nothing on the tape). It was kind of a bummer, because it was definitely the best set I've ever seen them play. They're sounding a lot less "metal." It works pretty well for them.
I still can't wait for the next Unhallowed show, though. It's been too damn long. If the "reunion" show on New Year's was any indication, it should be pretty sweet.
Here are some pics from last night's party, just so I don't promise 'em and forget to actually post 'em:
Saviours were mind-blowing. So was Fu Manchu. That other band touring with 'em wasn't as good, but weren't terrible, either.
I would post pictures later, but I accidentally left my camera at home. Bummer.
+ New York Dolls! They sounded pretty good, despite only having two living original members.
- They played a lot of songs off the new album. Those songs were terrible.
+ They also played lots of old songs!
- David Johansen obviously stuffs his jeans. Also, he has a nasty muffin top.
+ They played "Personality Crisis" for the encore.
- They also played a new song to close the show and destroyed the momentum they could've left the stage with in doing so.
Also, the security guards went nuts kicking people out. The crowd was visibly bored when the band played new songs. Erik and Chris and Alex heckled them. "Buster" was the word of the day. Their drummer is also in Dirty Pretty Things. That's kinda lame.
Oh, and let us not forget how unkind the 80's were to a lot of the people involved. This video is very related to the rest of the post:
I have a free ticket to see the New York Dolls tonight!
So I guess I'll go.
I wish the Sleazy weren't a bunch of shitheads about bringing cameras in, 'cause I'd love to have pictures for you later, but I'm not gonna complain too hard.
They're really desperate to fill this show. Two of my friends have lots of free tickets, and the price was recently slashed to 16 bucks.
I'm pretty stoked.
Oh, and for those who haven't already friended my rad homies over at W♥M, I just posted an article on Indian Summer, a band I like, mere minutes ago!
Oh, and this record. It's really, really fucking good. Having a Mastodon shit all over your band's chest is definitely a good thing.
And yes, it sounds like the kind of thing Kemado would put out. If that scares you, then you might want to steer clear.
They're playing here in Boise on March 4th, with Fu Manchu. I'm fuckin' there.
Also, looking forward to The Sword with Slough Feg and Children, Converge with Baroness, and I might also make it out to New York Dolls (although I don't know yet; Mahjongg is playing the same night with Calvin Johnson, and that sounds way more appealing than seeing a band that's all old and shit pretend to be young). Also might make it out to Vampire Weekend, and 65daysofstatic.
